DUBAI: A series of portrait paintings of prominent women by Susan Brooker, a Dubai-based artist, were showcased in her first solo exhibition, “Ladies in Paints”, held at Z Gallery at Four Points by Sheraton on Sheikh Zayed Road.
The opening night was held on the weekend and attended by a number of art lovers from different backgrounds. The exhibition is open till June 15.
Brooker, who has already been part of many group exhibitions and has been appreciated by many art lovers, has been living in Dubai for nine years but began painting only three years ago. “I have been drawing and painting when I was in school but later in life there were many Susan-3other priorities. Some three years ago, my husband discovered one of my sketch books that revealed my art talent which was hidden till its discovery. That was the point he encouraged me to start painting and always supported me at every step,” she told The Gulf Today in an exclusive interview on the opening night.
Since she started painting three years ago, her work has been mostly portraits of women, especially of prominent personalities who are well-known in their respective fields.
So far she has painted various prominent women including Sophia, Marilyn, Audrey, Twiggy, Kate, Geisha, Akiko, Queen, Indian Beauty and others. A total of 15 portraits have been displayed at the exhibition at a price range between Dhs6,400 to Dhs12,000.
Her paintings show bright colours with a blend of different shades and make every single piece of her work a striking unique face. “The aim of my paintings is to give a visual impact by capturing a portrait in a unique way that does not melt into its surroundings,” she said.
“I am fascinated by people, colours and graffiti, which I believe is reflected in the way I paint. I concentrate and zoom in on just the face, deconstruct the subject and then reconstruct it using vibrant and contrasting oil paint and just a palette knife,” she said.
Responding to a question, she said, “So far in the last three years, I have painted only women and it has a huge opportunity of using colours while painting other subjects will limit my creativity,” she added.
Most of her work is on oil canvas but she has also completed a number of paintings in acrylic, ink and graphite and many of her paintings are part of a private collection in Montenegro, Kuwait, Goa and by different collectors in Dubai. She is also currently featured in Contemporary Art of Excellence (Vol. 1) authored by Global Art Agency (GAA).
Erik Vedsegaard, General Manager at Four Points by Sheraton, said that they were very excited to have Susan exhibiting her work with them. “The response on the opening of the ‘Ladies In Paint’ exhibition which is her first solo exhibition is remarkable as we at the Z Gallery are planning to bring more contemporary artists to provide our guests a unique blend of art,” he said.
The Z Gallery, located on the first floor of Four Points by Sheraton Sheikh Zayed Road, is open to both guests and visitors giving them an eye into the world of art with displays of beautiful pieces from both local and international artists.
