SCHS, Seoul University launch mobile app making competition

SHARJAH: For university students with the knowledge and interest in designing mobile phone applications, a competition to design assistive applications was announced on Monday. The competition was launched by the Assistive Technology Center at Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in cooperation with Seoul National University Quality of Life Technology Center (QoLT), with the sponsorship of LG Electronics.
The launch ceremony held at the University of Sharjah was attended by Sheikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the General Manger of SCHS, Professor Lee and Duk Young Kim, the President of LG-UAE along with prominent dignitaries. schs-11
According to the officials, the launch of the competition is part of the ongoing cooperation between SCHS and QoLT. Sheikha Jameela,  Professor Lee and Duk Young Kim signed a MoU for the competition which aims at raising awareness between university students about the importance of assistive applications that support and assist people with disabilities.
“In the first year of the competition, the shortlisted students who applied for the competition will be given 2-week training to design a web-based Java application to benefit people with special needs. Later the competition will be spread to other platforms like 3D printing, software for wearable gadgets and designing hardware to provide maximum benefit to the people with disabilities,” said Professor Lee while presenting the competition’s its rules and regulations.
The first phase of the competition (from April to mid-August) will be for the submission and screening of the applications, 40-50 students will be selected to go to the second stage of the competition, at which selected students will undergo an intensive course in assistive application development.
Furthermore, the students will be divided into groups to start the development of the assistive applications.
The third and final phase (mid-September) will be the selection of the winning assistive application in the competition.
The team with the best assistive application will travel to Seoul to participate in the HCI conference where they will gain more experience so as to expand their knowledge and creativity to assist them in the development of technologies that will cater to people with disabilities.
The winning team will visit LG Electronics headquarters and take a sightseeing tour in Korea.
The competition is part of the ongoing efforts of the Assistive Technology Center at SCHS to highlight and raise awareness about the need for assistive services, and to encourage university students in the UAE to unleash their creativity and create innovative solutions that will help people with disabilities.
