PJF pays respects to Majid Nizami

PJF meeting1DUBAI: The newly elected body of Pakistan Journalist Forum (PJF) held a condolence meeting to pay rich tribute to the country’s legendary journalist, Dr Majid Nizami, who passed away last week in Lahore, Pakistan.
Dr Nizami was not only a veteran journalist but also served as Editor-in-Chief of Pakistan’s second largest Urdu daily Nawa-i-Waqt for almost 52 years. He was also leading the Nawai Waqt Group which comprises many daily and weekly publications including The Nation, an English newspaper. He was 86 years old and suffered from cardiac issues for the last couple of weeks and was being treated in a local hospital in Lahore.
Ashfaq Ahmad, president of the forum who had also worked in The Nation, Lahore office for six years termed Dr Nizami a great figure of journalism in Pakistan’s history. “There is not a single person in the country who served as head of a newspaper for five decades with such honour and dignity. Working in The Nation for six years, I would meet him almost on a daily basis. It was an honour for me as well as all those journalists who served under Dr Nizami. He was not only committed to the true ethics of journalism, but was also known for his attitude of never compromising on his principles throughout his career,” he said.
Tahir Munir Tahir, senior vice president, has been working for Dr Nizami for the last over four decades to send stories and a weekly column from Dubai. “During my career span of almost 44 years, I had been in contact with Dr Nizami on a regular basis. Whenever I visit Pakistan, we had a meeting and every time he taught something new. He was a legend, a truly great person,” he said.
Hafiz Zahid, general secretary said that Dr Nizami had spent a great deal of time serving as the editor of a leading newspaper and it was his charisma and love of journalism that not a single person termed him a controversial personality.
Arshad Rana, finance secretary highlighted the different qualities of his personalities as an editor and co-worker with other journalists. “He was also brave person and never failed to raise his voice in front of government as the echo of his comment in front of president Zial-ul-Haq in the early ’80s is still felt in the corridors of power,” he added. Members of executive committee including Suleman Jazib, Khalid Gondal and others also spoke on the occasion and paid a rich tribute to the country’s legend journalist.
Journalists working in the UAE have announced the new body after the dissolving the previous body that recently completed its term of 2 years.
The condolence meeting for Dr Nizami was the first event organised by the newly elected body represented by the working journalists in different media houses in the UAE.
Ashfaq Ahmad, president of PJF, pointed that soon they are going to organise a meeting to announce the agenda of activities for the next 2-year term to benefit the working journalists in different newspapers in the UAE.
