PTI-Dubai Meeting

Overseas Pakistanis await voting rights

By Jamil Khan @ The Gulf Today-Sharjah, May 07, 2014

DUBAI: Overseas Pakistani community members are being assured that soon they will hear the good news regarding whether or not voting rights will be given to overseas Pakistanis as a resolution in the national assembly is waiting to be discussed. The government in Pakhtoonkhwa Province will be exemplary this year as a number of initiatives taken earlier have started giving fruitful results.
This was stated by Khayal Zaman Orakzai, a Dubai-based businessman and member of the National Assembly elected on the ticket of cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI). He was addressing a gathering of party supporters and the newly elected body of office bearers of PTI’s UAE chapter in Dubai on Monday.Image
“We (PTI) have been enjoying a unique position overseas as every country has a huge number of supporters of Imran Khan and his party. The PTI-led coalition government in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa Province has taken a number of harsh decisions to improve education, health and other sectors. Soon the nation will see the good results especially in law and order situation as well as in other field like administration, education and health,” Orakzai said.
He said that their government has introduced strict rules to ban favouritism and curb corruption, especially in the police department throughout the province, as well as induct teachers to thousands of posts vacant in the province for last couple of years.
“Without improving education and empowering women, no nation has ever developed. Our government is turning every stone in this regard and we are lucky to have huge support from the public sector as well,” he added.
He showed reservations on the delay of process to extend voting rights to overseas community members on request of the PTI, as a commission had been set up in the country since 2009 and the issue has yet to be resolved.
“We have also tabled a resolution in the national assembly and soon it will be part of the daily agenda. We are assured that it will be taken seriously – to give voting rights – and to introduce biometric voting mechanisms in the country in the next elections,” he said.
However, he extended his gratitude to the newly elected body of office bearers and hoped that they will work with the same spirit to spread the party message among the community. He also asked younger generations to be an active part of the country’s politics and strengthen the hands of Imran Khan who has devoted his life to bringing positive change in country and improve the lives of the people.
During the question-answer session, community members asked the MNA to bring the issue of giving voting right to overseas Pakistanis, as it should be discussed now rather than on the eve of the next elections.
Those who addressed the gathering were including Mian Owais Ahmed, Azizullah Khan, Mir Hassan, Amjad Iqbal Amjad and Ayub Afridi.
