Physically challenged children participate in AUD Open Day

DUBAI: A large number of children with special needs, their families, and the organisations providing education and training to their children, attended an open day organised by Rashid Centre for the Disabled in collaboration with the American University in Dubai (AUD) recently.
Different schools and training centres for special needs set up their stalls and showcased the products made by their particular centre’s students. The families, patrons and students of the university had attended the open day and appreciated the demonstrations of different skills by the students with the special needs of the Rashid Centre.
The open day was also attended by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Ahmed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Juma Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, the managing director of Rashid Centre, Ahmed Hashim Khoury, founder of the centre, Ilyas Bousaab, vice president of the AUD and Maryam Othman, director general of the centre as well as a number of volunteers from different segments of the society.
The purpose of the open day was to raise the awareness of those with special needs among the university’s students as well as highlight the awareness of the demands and the integrating of the special needs students into the mainstream society.
Sheikh Juma Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum commented on the organising of the event by saying: “The American University in Dubai has allowed us to organise the open day for the children with special needs.
It is a great opportunity to build a bridge of communication and have a relationship with university students. It helps them to be aware of their abilities and talents as creative individuals. This helps  promote and deepen community awareness of the direction of their concerns and needs as human beings,” he added.
In turn he thanked Maryam Othman expressed his appreciation that the university extended to them this wonderful opportunity.
Ilyas Bousaab, vice president of AUD, said that: “I am proud of this honour by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Ahmed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, and Sheikh Juma Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, on behalf of the Rashid Centre for the Disabled , and we are honoured to host this special occasion at the university and see the children’s talents grow and their artwork gleam. We are delighted to join this in promoting the awareness of the local community, and we applaud the centre for organising this inspiring event,” he added.
