DUBAI: The Pakistani community in the UAE has not succeeded in bringing any new members to run their social welfare associations in Dubai and Sharjah.
Recently, the Pakistan Association in Dubai (PAD) witnessed the unanimous selection of the previous office-bearers as not a single community member came forward to challenge and contest the elections held every two years.
Like PAD, none from the Sharjah branch also came forward to contest for the Pakistan Social Centre Sharjah (PSCS) as the election body announced the date for new elections to be held on Nov.6.
Shah Nawaz Bukhari, chairman of the election committee, told The Gulf Today that they were expecting at least two groups to come forward and take part in the Nov.6 election to run the community centre for the next two years.
“We announced the complete schedule for the new election on Oct.12 as per the directives of the Sharjah Ministry of Social Affairs and we were expecting at least two groups to submit their papers for the 11-member panel of office-bearers. But only one panel comprising the previous body submitted their papers and hence were unanimously re-elected,” he said.
He pointed out that they had informed the Ministry of Social Affairs about the updates on the PSCS elections for a date to be finalised for oath taking of the new body.
Bukhari said that they had approached a number of community members in personal category to encourage them to come forward and take part in the election process.
Community members residing in Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah were asked to take part in the PSCS elections as panels besides increasing the membership for the centre.
The new panel which won unanimously included president Chaudhry Zafar Iqbal, vice president Mumtaz Ali, general secretary Muhammad Nawaz, joint secretary Taqi Saeed, finance secretary Dost Muhammad Awan, education and religious secretary Iftikhar Ali, welfare secretary Javed Najam, social and cultural secretary Rashid Ali, legal affairs secretary Muhammad Dawood, sport secretary Khalilur Rehman, and Ehsanullah Khan as information secretary.
