DUBAI: An Indo-Pak duo, both employees of the Transguard Group, put in a great performance to win the title of Western Union’s Camp Ka Champ (Champions of the Camp)-Season Seven, the singing competition for labourers.
The singing competition, also widely known as the ‘Dubai Idol’ contest, saw Dhruv Bakshi from India and Zulfiqar Ali Qureshi from Pakistan, winning not only the hearts of thousands of labourers who had gathered to show their support to the singers, but also a glittering trophy, besides a good amount in cash and electronic products as prizes.
The grand finale, attended by thousands of labourers from across labour camps, was held at the Al Muhaisnah 2 in Dubai on Thursday night and followed the staging of the semi finals at the same venue of the seventh season of the popular singing contest.Image
Season 7 started in July this year, when around 3,000 labourers from 16 companies took part in auditions, and after a lengthy process that shortlisted 200 singers, only 30 were selected for the final rounds held during August and September.
Besides different companies who came forward to sponsor the contest this year, the Ministry of Labour (MoL) also extended its support for the event and distributed cell phones among the 12 contestants of the grand finale.
Rupa Vinod, Managing Director of Right Track Advertising and the organiser of the competition and one who played a major role in its success, said the major CSR initiative by the various sponsors ensured that a unique platform was provided to labourers. She added that besides cash prizes, the winners’ talents would be recognised by recording two CD albums of their performances.
“During the last seven years, this competition has brought fun, excitement and tremendous sense of competition among the working class,” she said.
During the competition, the organisers launched a new CD album ‘Camp Ka Champ Music CD,’ a compilation of songs sung by winners of previous competitions, including some by the finalists of this year’s edition.
The audience were distributed free copies of the CDs, beside gift hampers donated by some of the sponsors.
Talking to The Gulf Today, Bakshi, 24, attributed the win to God’s blessings and the support of his colleagues, many of whom were present on the occasion.
“Besides working 12 hours a day, it was not an easy task to practise but my roommates were very supportive throughout the process, and tonight, I dedicate my win to all my friends,” he said.
Zulfiqar Ali Qureshi, who has been in Dubai for the last two years, was lucky enough to be shortlisted and reach the finals. “I have been singing since my childhood, but this was the first major breakthrough in my life, not only to get recognition, but also prizes, including the winning trophy for the new Camp Ka Champ 2013,” he said.
The winners were awarded around Dhs8000 each, besides return tickets, smart TVs and smartphones by the sponsors, which included Western Union, Air Arabia, MoL, among others.
