Panel focuses on differently abled

DUBAI: ABILITIESme, the first regional platform celebrating the potential of special needs communities in collaboration with The Autism Trust Foundation (ATF), has organised a panel discussion on “Social Entrepreneurship and Activism: More than one way to empower the community”.
The discussion among prominent speakers highlighted various aspects of people with special needs and their potential to excel in the fields of entrepreneurship and fulfil social responsibilities.
The event was attended by around 200 guests including representatives from special needs centres from all over the UAE.
They enjoyed Iftar and entertainment programmes followed by an auction of a numbers of goods to raise funds for people with special needs.
The speakers who discussed different aspects related to people with special needs included Shereen Al Nuwais, CSR manager at ADMA/Adnoc, Aisha Saeed Harib, CEO and founder of SocialBandag, Reem Al Ghaith, CSR manager at Desert Group, Fahed Bin Al Shaikh, deputy chairman at the Autism Trust Foundation and Mohammed Saeed Harib, founder of Freej.
Harib spoke about her project which aims at raising awareness on the issues of people with special needs. “During the Holy Month of Ramadan, we have been coordinating with Dubai Police distributing Iftar packets to drivers besides organising other activities along with our volunteers,” she said.
Reem Al Ghaith, CSR manager at Desert Group, said, “The Desert Group is a UAE firm involved in an agriculture project. It has around 37 employees most of whom have intellectual disabilities. Special needs people are given training on farming and in the next stage they will be trained on selling their agriculture products,” she said.
Prudence Kolong, one of the senior officials of dmg Events, told The Gulf Today that the panel discussion and the upcoming road show in universities all over the UAE are aimed at raising awareness on special needs.
“In this regard we are organising a huge conference which will be held from March 24-26, 2014 under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre,” she said.
