SHARJAH: The corridors of the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) are buzzing with a lively debate on who should replace Asif Ali Zardari as Pakistan President when his tenure ends on Sept.8 but whose successor is likely to be elected in the first week of next month.
The names making rounds are those of Sartaj Aziz and Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
The Gulf Today talked to a number of senior party workers in the UAE to find out their opinion on the candidate for the top slot, which is merely ceremonial as most of the power lies in the hands of parliament.
Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister and head of PML-N is yet to give his nod on any name, but different forums have finalised a long list of names based on their own so-called polls.
Chaudhry Khalid Bashir, Chief Coordinator, PML-N UAE, informed that the present president, Asif Zardari, was earlier effective on various decisions of the government, but of late the post had become merely ceremonial and all the power lay in the hand of parliament.
“Under the parliamentary system of government, the president has little power. However, a person who has a good reputation and is acceptable to every party should be on this post. The most likely candidate is Sartaj Aziz, who is from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), as he is a senior politician and has a wide experience in the country’s politics,” he said.
He said that the president should be from smaller provinces (KP, Balochistan). “If the party leadership finalises Sartaj Aziz as the candidate, this issue will be resolved  by bringing other provinces in the power corridors.”
Momen Khan, President PML-N, Al Ain chapter, told The Gulf Today that the new president should be from a smaller province as two major slots in the current government ñ prime minister and speaker national assembly ñ are held by politicians from Punjab.
“I feel that the presidential candidate should be from Balochistan. Several supporters are backing the name of senior politician Mehmood Khan Achakzai as he belongs to an ally party of PML-N.  Besides, he has a good reputation in politics,” he said.
Rao Akbar Ali Saqi, Vice President, PML-N Al Ain chapter, said that supporters were closely observing Pakistan politics through news channels as the discussion on the name of Sartaj Aziz was a good sign.
