ImageDUBAI: People should include local fresh produce like vegetables and fruits in their daily diet to strengthen the body’s immune system.
Research has proven that local produce provides the required strength to the immune system as compared to outside food.
Dr Shahnaz Haque said this while addressing a selected gathering  at a workshop themed “Food for thought.”
The workshop was organised by Sukh Sagar — a chain of Asian restaurants known for its traditional cuisine — at Jumeirah Beach Lake, Dubai on Thursday.
Dr Haque has been delivering lectures on healthy food and balanced lifestyle in different parts of Europe and United States since she retired from practice a couple of years ago.
This was her first such lecture in Dubai and she shared different findings on food items, especially packaged items being widely used throughout the world.”
“To acquire maximum benefits from food, one should include local produce in their daily diet. Local produce is natural and healthy and  strengthens our immune system to combat any risk factor of diseases,” she said.
She further said that people are now becoming more aware now and adopting a healthy lifestyle, resulting in the decline of heart-related diseases, diabetes and cancer.
“Around 95 per cent diseases surrounding us are the result of a bad and unhealthy lifestyle and most of them can be controlled by bringing in a positive change in lifestyle,” she said.
Dr Haque also highlighted various aspects of the food industry and the conducive environment in which the vegetables and fruits are produced without the aid of artificial preservatives.
Dhanraj Poojari, managing director, told The Gulf Today that they have been conducting various workshops in the past under the theme “Food for thought.”
“It is a part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) to create awareness in the society about eating healthy, buying healthy food items and adopting a healthy lifestyle as a holistic approach towards diet and lifestyle in general,” he added.
He further said that every culture has different diets and lifestyles and through these workshops they aim to inform people about eating the right food at the right time and be conscious of what they are buying for their meals.
“To continue this exercise, we are going to bring more experts on food and services to deliver lectures at our facilities to make people aware on healthy diet plans. We also plan to  expand our CSR activities to benefit different segments of the society,” he added.
