DUBAI: Hundreds of enthusiastic Pakistani expatriates are participating in a four-day “Pakistan Mela” being organised by the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) at its premises in Oud Metha, Dubai.
The event, marked by fun-filled activities and participation by over two dozen academic institutes from Pakistan, was inaugurated by the country’s Consul General Tariq Iqbal Soomro in the presence of dignitaries from various communities as well as diplomats from different countries on Thursday night.
Pakistan Day will be celebrated by the community on Saturday in the UAE as well as all over the world where Pakistanis reside.
The major attractions for visitors are traditional food items, garments and books. Around 42 stalls have been set up by individuals to promote Pakistani products among the community.
Dr Faisal Ikram, while talking to The Gulf Today, said the main theme of the opening ceremony was to highlight global peace and harmony among nations.
“To emphasise  this, we had invited diplomats from various countries. The consul generals from Philippines, Thailand, Bosnia and Ghana attended the opening ceremony,” he said.
He added that a prominent Pakistani artist, Kaleem Shaharyar, showcased his artwork with flags of 17 countries that he had prepared using semi-precious stones to promote global peace. Around 32 academic institutes from different parts of Pakistan also participated in a “Study In Pakistan” exhibition as part of the festival.
The representatives of the country’s high-ranking academic universities were busy answering queries by students and their parents about new courses and degrees offered by these institutes to community members in the UAE.
“We have not only been promoting our universities here, but also offer a huge range of degree courses to students who seek higher education in a range of academic fields from science to arts and engineering to business administration,” an official said.
As part of the Pakistan Mela, around 400 students from various Pakistani schools in Dubai along with community members organised a beach cleaning drive at Jumairah Beach on Friday.
The drive was organised by the PAD in collaboration with the Dubai Municipality (DM) and was attended by senior officials of DM and the Community Development Authority (CDA).
The officials hailed the participation of the Pakistani community in the clean environment drive and appreciated the performances by the schoolchildren.
