THE city government’s sanitary workers and others deputed in different departments who are working as low-grade employees have demanded a bonus of at least their basic salary as honorarium against what they achieved in the last five days.

They not only cleaned the city promptly but also managed to maintain the cleanliness during the three days that the city celebrated Eid. Majority of the sanitary workers had been busy for the last five days in removing the large numbers of offal after the sacrifices on Eid-ul-Azha.

City District Government Karachi (CDGK) officials deputed in other departments including encroachment cell, building and roads, electric and maintenance, solid waste and parks served the citizens throughout Karachi without any break and did not spend Eid with their loved ones either.

To add to the workload of the poor sanitary workers different communities celebrated Eid at different times. The Bohri community living in different parts of Saddar, Jamshed Town, Lyari, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulberg and Keamari towns celebrated Eid on Sunday. On Monday, the Afghans residing in Bin Qasim, Gadap, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Baldia and Site towns celebrated Eid-ul-Azha and sacrificed thousands of animals.

One of the officials at the CDGK’s Solid Waste Department said that the city government had devised a contingency plan in which 18,000 officials performed their duties on Union Council (UC), town and city levels. The officials used 600 dumpers, loaders and other vehicles of the CDGK. Besides this, 4,000 open pick-ups, tractor-trolleys, trucks and other machinery was also hired to carry out cleanliness operation, he added.

Municipal Workers Trade Union Alliance Chairman Zulfiqar Shah told Daily Times that the offal removing operation and the maintenance of hygiene were appreciated by everyone including the high-ups of the provincial government as well as the citizens.

“The city government should consider the services of its employees who performed their duties with extraordinary zeal. All the employees who were involved in this operation should be given one month’s basic salary as a bonus for their great performance,” he said.

He also mentioned that the employees would be given over-time as per schedule for the extra hours of duty but the city nazim should announce an extra bonus to acknowledge the performance.

It is also mentioned that the sanitary workers and other city government officials removed more then one million offal from the city and dumped it at a pre-defined site in Surjani Town’s Scheme 41.

However, to acknowledge the performances of the employees, Jamshed Town Nazim Javed Ahmed has organized a grand lunch for all the employees of the township and the ceremony will be held on Sunday at Kashmir Road.

Liaquatabad Town Nazim Osama Qadri congratulated the employees who worked in the township and maintained extraordinary cleanliness. The town nazim also visited all UCs on Friday and told them to maintain cleanliness so that the town could be a model for the rest of the city all year round.

Furthermore, Acting Town Nazim Malir Sharafat Ali directed the officials to continue the ongoing cleanliness drive.
