Eunuchs’ Protest

‘Real’ eunuchs protest for freedom in city
By Jamil Khan | KARACHI

OVER two dozen eunuchs, loudly clapping outside the Karachi Press Club, chanted ‘Benazir Bhutto-Zindabad’ and ‘Hai-Hai’ while protesting against the alleged abuse and harassment by ‘officials’ that have driven many of them to suicide.
The eunuchs flocked from Ziauddin and Musa Colonies in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town and while demonstrating they also proved to the media that they were the ‘real’ eunuchs and not the amateurs involved in immoral activities who are seen on the city roads at night.
The leader of the group, Bubli, a senior eunuch, femininely attired and wearing a dark shade of lipstick and make-up told Daily Times that the city government community police officials have started a campaign against eunuchs. “We make money on the streets by begging but since the last month, community police officials have forcibly transported us in open garbage trucks and have abandoned us on deserted sites along the Super Highway,” Bubli said.
She alleged that on their way to the city’s outskirts, officials not only abused them but sometimes they ask them to perform immoral actions for them. “They torture us to carry out behavior that is sexually abusing.”
Another eunuch, Shehzadi, said that due to the recent campaign, members of their community have been forced to commit suicide because of hunger and the inability to meet their daily needs. “In the current circumstances, if we step outside our houses, officials capture us but if we stay at home who will provide us with food and other daily commodity items?” she asked. Shehzadi said that if the government cannot provide eunuchs with suitable living conditions then they should shoot us and ‘clean’ the society.
“It is the first time that any government has taken such steps against eunuchs, neither the regime of Benazir Bhutto nor Nawaz Sharif did such a thing,” she mentioned.
During the hour-long protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club, commuters enjoyed dances performed by the eunuchs on different tunes, which also disturbed others who had decided to protest in their camps.
The Community Police Chief Azhar Hashmi, while talking to Daily Times, refuted the blames alleged by the eunuchs. “We have started a drive against beggars and there is no intention to target eunuchs,” he said.
