1st Mind Sports National Championship concludes

INTERNATIONAL master and eleven times national master Mehmood Lodhi won the chess title in the First Mind Sports National Championship that concluded at the Southend Club, DHA here on Sunday. The national championship was organised by the Mind Sports Association of Pakistan (MSAP) in collaboration with the Pakistan Bridge Federation, Chess Federation of Pakistan and Scrabble Association of Pakistan. Nauman Butt won the individual bridge championship while Wasim Kathri became the singles champion in the scrabble championship. City Naib Nazima Nasreen Jalil was the chief guest and distributed shields and cash prizes among the winners.

In all 72 pairs, divided into six groups of three tables each, participated in the bridge championship. Every individual had to play against the other eleven individuals within their group and each round constituted of three boards. After conclusion of eleven rounds, Nauman Butt of LUMS won the championship with the score of 353.50. Ghufran Ashraf was second and Pervez Mirza was third. The winner received cash prize of Rs 30,000 while second and third position holders earned Rs 10,000 each.

After conclusion of eight rounds, Mehmood Lodhi of Punjab defeated Rais Ahmed Ansari of Karachi to win the chess title. Amir Karim claimed the second position while Haseeb Ahmed earned the third spot. Cash prize of Rs 154,000 was distributed among the sixteen positions holders of the chess championship.

Wasim Khatri scored 22 points with spread of 740 points to grab the singles crown. He pocketed Rs 35,000. Second position holder Muhammad Suleman, who scored 22 points with spread of 530 points, won cash prize of Rs 20,000 while Wajid Iqbal, with 22 points and spread of 375 points, received Rs 15,000. Javeria Waqar won the first prize in the student category while Yousuf Baqar and Kanza Huda bagged second and third positions respectively. In the intermediate category, Ather Shafiq was first while Imtiaz Siddiqi and Irshad Khan were second and third respectively. In the recreational category, Asma Abid won the first position while Rabia Javed and Dr Nuzhat Javed claimed second and third positions respectively.
