DUBAI: People residing in Dubai and the other emirates have an opportunity to participate in a charity gala dinner to be hosted by former cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and enjoy a live performance by Pakistan’s top pop band Strings.
The fundraiser is being oganised by Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) on Feb.21 at Atlantis The Palm, Jumeirah.
The charity gala dinner is being held to raise money and awareness for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and its research centre in Lahore, Pakistan. It is the only such facility in the country that was built by Imran Khan in 1994 in memory of his mother who had passed away due to the illness.
The 176-bed Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital has an annual budget of Pakistani Rs4.3 billion, with most of the funds being contributed by philanthropists around the world.
In a recent interview, Imran Khan had pointed out that the facility has been supporting over 75 per cent poor patients free of charge. No such hospital anywhere in the world offers these type of services free of cost.
According to sources close to Khan, he is also planning to set up another cancer hospital in Peshawar to benefit those deprived of state-of-the-art facilities in the province of Khyber Pukhtoonkhawa.
The charity dinner will also feature a live performance by ‘Strings,’ live auction of memorabilia, besides raffle draws.
‘Strings’ is a two-member internationally-acclaimed Pakistani band, comprising Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia, who enjoy tremendous fan following in Pakistan, India, UAE as well as in Europe and the USA.
